Jesus teaches us to love in a way that causes us to be "perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect." Love of our friends is imperfect or incomplete. To love our enemies as God loves His, that is perfect love.

As much as we may try to learn the love of God, we will encounter obstacles in our flesh. Some of these may include characteristics of envy and self-seeking, as James describes in James 3. If we are to learn love as Jesus teaches, we need to learn to overcome these obstacles.

Salt and Light
Jesus describes the effect those who strive for the qualities in the beatitudes will have on the world. They are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
From these analogies, Jesus goes on to say that He did not come to destroy but to fulfill the law. How does He do that? And how does that help us be truly righteous?

Jesus teaches that, according to true righteousness, we must address sin from the heart. In Matthew 5:21-37, He describes three scenarios: anger against a brother, lust, and dishonesty and integrity.

Perfect Love, Matt. 5:38-48
In the sermon on the Mount Jesus teaches us to turn the other cheek and our enemies. These may be difficult sayings for some, but they are not new concepts. Jesus teaches how to live as Gods as always defied his people to live.
